Post Trip
FINAL FLING DOWN THE DELAWARE
September 1st, 2025
Not in a rush to go home on Labor Day Monday morning? Wanna squeeze in one more paddle? Then this post-trip
activity is just right for you!
Enjoy a 6- or 10-mile paddle down the southern section of the Delaware River Water Gap National Recreation
Area. We will drive to the outfitter, who will take us and our rented watercraft to the starting point at
Smithfield Beach. From there, we’ll paddle 6 miles to Kittatinny Access. If timing is good (hopefully!), we
will continue another 4 miles to Portland. Wherever we all stop, the outfitter will pick us up and return us
to their home base. Parking is free at their location.
This paddle is not recommended for complete novices, but you are welcome if you have some recent experience
in a canoe or kayak. Canoes and kayaks will be available for rent from “Edge of the Woods Outfitters” in
Delaware Gap.
The first section of the trip is a beautiful, mellow section of the Delaware River. At Kittatinny, the
actual Delaware Water Gap offers a breathtaking and dramatic view, where the river cuts through the
Kittatinny Mountain range. If time permits, we may swim, picnic, and relax on the islands or river banks in
this area.
There is a good chance we may see bald eagles, ospreys, and other wildlife along the way.
Bring water, food, sunscreen, dry bags to hold lunch, paddler’s wallet, and closed-toe shoes for water
activities at the vendor.
Details are still being worked on. Stay tuned for updates.
